The Importance of Soft Skills

Education is our journey of learning hard but important skills. It includes technical skills and knowledge that helps us understand the world, how it works, and how to better operate in it. In this society which always expects everyone to score high, we are so hardwired to learn hard skills that we end up neglecting the importance of developing soft skills. As a result, while a person has the knowledge and skills to do something, he/she may not have the right mind, motivation or the execution methods to act on it. This brings to light to how important the development of soft skills is:

1. Hard skills are of no use without soft skills
In most of the jobs these days, you would require hard skills to work. For example, if you are an Accountant, then your hard skills are your accounting skills and how well you maintain the balance sheet. However, if you do not have the soft skills, you will struggle to progress in a job. During a job interview, employers look for confidence, passion, influence of conversation etc., along with the technical skills. Employers do not like to work with those who will do just as they are asked to and not put in a mind of their own; they like those who can take steps on their own, take the lead, and innovate on the job.

2. It takes time to learn Soft Skills
The major difference between hard skills and soft skills is that hard skills are acquired whereas soft skills are learned. Soft skills are developed over time, and they help shape your personality. These help in identifying your strengths and weakness, and thus, these are difficult to learn.

3. Modern Workplaces are Interactional
Earlier, workplaces used to be places with dull buildings with fixed work timings and employees would leave the very second the office hours would end. But now, with flexible working hours and work from home, the work nowadays is more goal-based rather than time-based. It requires you to constantly interact with others, for which soft skills are appreciated in the work place.

Soft skills cannot be taught like hard skills can be. They are to be learned. There are several soft skills training institutes in Dubai, New York, Adelaide, and other global cities which help in developing and nurturing these soft skills. For professional as well as personal advancement in life, having the right soft skills can do you a world of good.
